Satellite events are organized by physics organizations and physics departments outside of the U.S. and serve to bring the APS Global Physics Summit to their local physics communities. Satellite events engage with the APS Global Physics Summit virtually in addition to hosting a local, in-person event in a country outside the United States. Physicists have the opportunity to participate in the APS Global Physics Summit without having to travel to Anaheim, California. Satellite events may range from a several-day meeting where students are bussed to a local university to watch scientific sessions to a more modest event that includes a local speaker and networking event. In some cases, satellite events may also offer an opportunity to present research to a global audience without having to travel to the U.S., while still enjoying the community aspect of an in-person event. There will also be 10 virtual session slots available for satellite event organizers to offer as part of their programming.
APS Global Physics Summit satellite events may include:
- Group viewings of live-streamed virtual and recorded, on-demand sessions from the APS Global Physics Summit
- Receptions and/or poster sessions
- Networking opportunities for young physicists and physics students
- A physics talk by a local speaker
- A virtual session broadcast to APS Global Physics Summit organized by the satellite event host and attendees, with a limit of 10 of these sessions available for applicants
- Dedicated programming on publishing in scientific journals/writing papers provided by the Purpose-Led Publishing coalition for events in less-resourced locations
Satellite events and virtual sessions
While there are an unlimited number of events that satellite sites can organize, approximately 10 virtual session slots in the 2025 APS Global Physics Summit program will be available to satellite sites to organize a “virtual-presentation session” of their choosing. This could be an opportunity to highlight their local community’s talent and physics research, or to organize a session around another topic. During this time, speakers can present their research to the Summit participants attending the virtual meeting. These virtual-presentation sessions will be allocated based on demand, and on a first-come, first-served basis while taking into account local time zones. Virtual sessions are two-hours long.
Please note that organizing a virtual-presentation session is not required to host a satellite event. Additionally, only 10 session slots will be available to satellite sites to organize. APS does not anticipate that all sites will organize a session, and we cannot guarantee that all satellite sites will be provided the opportunity, given the limited number of sessions.
