Mentoring practices in Physics

10:45 am – 11:21 am
Presenter: Michelle Perry Kuchera (Davidson College)

This talk will highlight research-based mentoring practices and, through this lens, look at current mentoring practices for physicists at different levels in their career paths. The historical and sociological evolution of how science is done will lay the groundwork for understanding the inequities present in science today. We look at mentoring as a method to combat systemic inequities in STEM, moving towards creating inclusive and welcoming communities for all. In particular, we will highlight strides made in our research and academic communities with respect to mentoring, including training practices for mentors. We conclude with a call to action for those currently active in inclusive mentoring and those interested in trying new approaches.
